Antique hand carved sandalwood chess set. It was made near the southwestern coast of India, probably around Mysore. We do not believe it was made before 1850, and it could easily have been made as late as 1900. Earlier carving (if you can believe it) was actually more intricate, and the ivory squares would also have been more ornately etched. It is difficult to imagine the astounding artistry of the work that Indian carvers produced unless you have seen it. We have studied it at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The form, carving, and ivory work of this set are typical of what was produced during the second half of the 19th century for the British market. Objects such as folding game boards, sewing and needlework boxes, lap desks, and jewel boxes, were produced in great quantities at that time, to satisfy the British demand for "exotic" goods from their colonial empire. You will notice that these chess pieces are European in style, particularly the crowns and turreted castles.

This reticulated sculpture is Japanese, made during the Meiji period (1868-1912). This six-foot-long figure represents a mythological dragon with a captured pearl in its mouth. Finely detailed, reticulated figures of dragons, fish, crustaceans, and lizards were created a century ago by Japanese master artisans in both wood and bronze.

Japanese bronze Meiji floor lamp

Japanese bronze Meiji floor lamp
Item # 4419

Japanese bronze floor lamp. This is a classic example of Meiji era style. Its design is reminiscent of a traditional Japanese toro, or temple lantern, minus the top. An actual toro would have a lantern top with a little "roof" and gridwork sides through which the flame would cast light. The earliest ones are stone, later ones are iron or bronze. During the Meiji period, 1868 to 1912, Japan began exporting heavily to the United States, especially bronzes and ceramics. These exported goods were tailored to Western needs and tastes. If you examine Meiji-era ceramics, particularly Imari, Arita, and Satsuma, you will see the same designs as the ones on this lamp. Floor lamps such as like this one were ofter used to illuminate a grand piano.
